I haven’t really posted new “mom songs” (apart from stories where they disappear haha) mostly because I think they are stupid and I’m so out of shape with singing, but trying to challenge myself to be vulnerable because I really do love writing these silly tunes, and I hope one day Maddie watches and sees how much I adore her. 💕

I find this for myself by teaching in varied contexts, from school classrooms to one-on-one lessons, to sharing volunteer masterclasses with interested students as far away as Panama. Faculty Spotlight: Wendy Eisenberg is an improvising guitarist, banjo-player, vocalist and poet. Using the languages of free jazz, new music, metal and art song, her music challenges the representational and technical demands placed on a guitar and a banjo in contemporary music.
She has two solo careers: improviser/composer, and songwriter. Wendy’s debut record as an improviser, “Its Shape Is Your Touch,” came out in October 2018. Her trio, “The Machinic Unconscious,” with Ches Smith and Trevor Dunn, released their debut album on Tzadik that same months. Both records made Billboard’s Critic’s Choice Top Ten Jazz Records year end list, and received features and attention from NPR and National Sawdust. Her album of quiet art-pop songs, Time Machine was remastered and re-released on Feeding Tube records on September 7th, 2018.
In addition to her work as a solo artist, she has written and performed in numerous projects, including the critically acclaimed experimental band Birthing Hips, described by NPR as “brainy, noisy punk based in sonic adventure, technical mastery, and rejection of the status quo.” She leads a rock trio, Editrix, which explores similar parameters.
Her work as an improviser has led her to collaborate with Matt Mitchell, Trevor Dunn, Ches Smith, Ted Reichman, Joe Morris, Damon Smith, Shane Parrish and Zach Rowden, among many others. She has premiered work by John Zorn, Matt Mitchell, Ted Reichman, Maria Schneider, and Marta Tiesenga, as well as works by her many peers, and has premiered her own work at The Stone, The New School, the Hartt School of Music, New England Conservatory, Yale, and Hampshire College.
Wendy has provided soundtrack work for the scientific projects of MIT Media Lab fellow and scientist-artist Ani Liu. Her poetry has been set into two large scale works by Matt Curlee, premiered at the Eastman School of Music in 2014 and one awaiting its premier featuring percussionist Michael Burritt. Her writings on music can be found in John Zorn’s Arcana VIII: Musicians on Music, and in the forthcoming edition of the Contemporary Music Review.

Faculty Spotlight: An important part of Boston’s Jazz scene since 1994, David Zoffer started his career in Pittsburgh, PA with televised appearances on keys and guitar beginning at age 12. Zoffer, now chair at New England Conservatory’s Prep/Continuing Education Jazz Department, and college faculty at Berklee and NEC’s Contemporary Improvisation Department, began cutting his teeth on Pittsburgh’s classic jazz and rock scenes.
Winning Jazz competitions in Pittsburgh led him to piano performances with Harry Connick, Jr., and Wynton Marsalis in New York, where he would later record and perform his originals and radical re-workings of standards on keys and guitar with Luciana Souza, Don Alias, Eddie Gomez, Bob Moses, Stan Strickland and Jeremy Udden at such venues including Iridium, The Knickerbocker, and The Bitter End. Zoffer has played numerous blues and jazz festivals ranging from Boston’s Regattabar jazz festival to the Reykjavik Jazz festival in Iceland.
David Zoffer combines the soulfulness of a blues musician, the compositional chops of an academic composer (he is Oberlin Conservatory’s 1st Jazz Composition graduate), the virtuosity of a jazz multi-instrumentalist and the stylistic diversity, arranging detail and storytelling lyricism of a pop music mastermind.

Faculty Spotlight: Peter Moffett earned his B.M. in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory in 2010.
His passion lies in his life as a professional freelance performing musician and music educator. A percussionist, he has lived in New York for five years, and performs and tours with several musical projects in Brooklyn including Secret Sibling, The Full Salon, Tredici Bacci, b o t, and Lip Talk.
A son of public school music teachers, Peter also maintains a robust teaching studio. In New York, Peter still teaches percussion at Third Street Music School Settlement, and in addition, he takes part in the Jazz Lab music camp at New England Conservatory, which he has participated in since its inception in 2013. For Peter, this serves as a reminder of why he became a musician and an educator in the first place – fostering and cultivating the musical and artistic minds of young people is an opportunity to carry torch that his parents and his high school band director and percussion instructor passed to him.

Faculty Spotlight: Bobby Spellman is an inventive improviser, an eclectic composer, a dynamic performer, and a dedicated educator. Known primarily as a trumpet player, Bobby can also be found performing on cornet, flugelhorn, and the elusive and quizzical soprano trombone. A consummate improviser, he is at once a devoted student of the jazz tradition and an avid proponent of the avant-garde. Bobby’s boundless love for organized sound brought him from a formal education in philosophy to the graduate program in jazz studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was fortunate to work with innovative improvisers Jerry Bergonzi, John McNeil, Dave Holland, Ran Blake, Joe Morris, and Rakalam Bob Moses. During several post-graduate years living in his native Boston, Bobby had the opportunity to play with some of the most adventurous groups in town, including the Either/Orchestra and Charlie Kohlhase’s Explorer’s Club, in many of Boston’s finest jazz venues: Sculler’s, Ryles, the Lily Pad, and the Outpost.
Beyond his work as a trumpeter, Bobby is known as an imaginative composer and a burgeoning theorist. Having spent several years closely studying George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization under composer and theorist Ben Schwendener, Bobby strives to use new paradigms in music theory to find the common ground uniting diverse musical traditions from around the globe, from European classical music and American jazz to the music of Ethiopia and West Africa, Eastern Europe, South Asia, and beyond. With creative intuition and the Lydian Chromatic Concept as his guide, Bobby uses his various groups as laboratories for experiments fusing jazz composition with free improvisation, functional harmony with exotic modality.

Faculty Spotlight: Michael Mayo began forging his musical identity long before he hit the stage.
The son of two successful musicians, the Los Angeles native grew up just a little
more than 20 feet from the likes of Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind and Fire
and Stevie Wonder. This proximity helped Mayo create a musical path centered
around the innovative elements of R&B and Jazz.
After receiving his Bachelor’s from the New England Conservatory of Music,
Mayo attended the acclaimed Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance,
only the third vocalist to be accepted into the 20-year-old program, where he
learned from Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Luciana Souza.
Mayo, now living in New York City, is a veteran international performer whose highlights include singing at the White House, the Kennedy Center and Renée Fleming’s American Voices Festival, as well as the Panama Jazz Festival. Most recently he has collaborated or shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Kneebody, Gretchen Parlato, Christian Sands, Josh Groban, Ben Wendel, Becca Stevens, and Theo Bleckmann among many others.
Whether he is performing with a full big band, a rhythm section or alone with a looper pedal, Mayo’s classic vocal style commands the attention of listeners worldwide.

Two years ago I grabbed this little baby 🎓🎓🎓. @necmusic was the best decision I ever made. If you’re going to go back to get your master’s my only advice is to do it in the thing you nerd-out MOST about (for me it was classical baroque music history 🤓🤓🤓). I didn’t go back till I was 28 but I’m really glad I did and for the journey since then!! #penguin #proudalum #necalumni #nec ❤️🎼🙌
