I’ve always strived to have a great back. Like everything it takes time and consistency. Here are a few exercises I found extremely helpful in developing my upper back:
1. Wide grip over hand cable row. Use a grip slightly wider than shoulder width usually a lat pull down bar is perfect. Pull back with your elbows and squeeze make sure to stretch on every rep.
2. Wide grip neutral grip row. Similar to the overhand grip row, but different hand positioning. I find this hand placement easier to keep my elbows in and not “up”. Some concept squeeze and stretch on each rep!
3. Machine wide grip overhand row. I know many gyms may not have this exact machine, but if you do use and abuse! It’s great in keeping tension on the squeeze and the stretch!
When targeting the upper back make sure to not keep your elbows high or you will ending hitting mostly rear delts. Focus on the squeeze and contraction rather than moving heavy weight. Use a weight you can control on the contraction so you can activate the upper back and traps rather then shoulders. - ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
