We found this incredible japonica growing in the hedge beside the oldest house in Wairoa.... does any body know if it has a name? Two of us looked at it (this picture was taken when flowering way past it's best) and both said 'that is the most beautiful flower we have ever seen??? We'd love to know more about it. Getting seedlings off to a good start is really important at this time of year, especially for things like tomatoes, peppers and eggplants that really need the warmth to get going. There are lots of different ways possible but I've found that, because I start quite a lot of seedlings off, then using a hot box works best for me.
We've got heaps of info on our website to help you including this article about using a Hot Box to get seedlings going early in the spring https://www.koanga.org.nz/knowledgebase/gardening/growing-seedlings/using-a-hot-box-for-starting-seeds-early/

Yesterday my grandma died. It was one of those deaths that you expect for years, but it never actually seems like it is going to happen. Interestingly, her leaving has reminded me that the grandma I knew and loved and adventured with has been gone for a long time. And now I actually get to grieve that version of my grandma. ..
I hope she’s happier. I hope she’s reunited with her husband who died over 30 years ago. And I hope she leaves all her plant juju behind because goodness knows I need it! This little start in the grey pot is from a split leaf philodendron (I think) that she had for many many years. Hoping I can keep it alive for many more. .

Spring Greens
You can get ahead and avoid a spring gap in greens after the winter greens finish by planting quick growing greens now.
My own particular favourites are Henry Harrington's Chinese Cabbage (pictured here), which grows amazingly fast and can be used in all the ways cabbage can be used and in salads, Tatsoi, also fast growing and with that lovely dark leaved cabbage taste and Red Coral Mizuna, which is just beautiful and gives that awesome mustard taste in cooking or in salads.
We have heaps more inspiration here for you in our Favourite Spring Greens https://www.koanga.org.nz/our-favourite-greens/favourite-spring-greens/

Plant Protein. 🌱 Most woman need in the region of 50g of protein a day. Nuts & seeds are a pretty good source but are only eaten in small amounts 🥜. These rare autumn peas contain circa 25g which is typical for many lentils and beans. BUT this is per dry 100g. Of course this will be more like half that amount depending on how much it swells once cooked. Wholegrains also contain protein, oats and quinoa in the region of 7-10g🥐. Again, convert to cooked ratio. Also consider with these high fibre wholefoods, your ability to digest and absorb. Will you absorb all of it, or will some go straight through. Interestingly, meat protein, as a comparison, contain around 20 or so grams (uncooked/the edible parts) 🥩- not 100% as you might think! Egg: 12.5g🥚. Cheese: 25g (but again the portions are small🧀). Those over 65 need additional protein to avoid muscle loss. Excess protein intake is converted to energy or fat 😕

I've had people ask me about perennial onions and when to plant. The tree onions and the shallots that we sell all grow in the same way - a bulb is planted and then over about 6 months forms a clump of bulbs around it. They are a great way to grow onions - they can be used in all of the ways 'normal' onions are used but can also be roasted whole in their skins and are just beautiful!
We still have shallots available and its still fine to plant them now. In fact if it stays fine I'll be planting a bed later today
Get in quick if you'd like to give these a try - I can't recommend them enough!

Gardens are such wonderful places to experiment with new plants. For several years, we have tried growing the typical things in our garden like carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, corn, peas and squash. But none of those ever did very well in our merciless Texas summer heat.
Then we decided to try growing more native, heritage and heirloom breeds of plants. Plants that were cultivated in our area of the country for hundreds of years by the Native Americans or grew wild. Or plants that were cultivated in the same climate as ours like Africa. I don't think we will try growing anything else ever again! Growing native plants or plants adapted to the environment of the area you live in takes all the work and often the disappointment out of gardening! 😊
As you can see, all the plants are doing well even in the 100 degree heat! Plants like golden amaranth, sorghum, cowpeas, dewberries (not pictured) and citrus love the heat and thrive in it! The cowpeas that we are growing are actually a heritage breed grown by Thomas Jefferson at one time at his home, Monticello.
And we often have little visitors now too enjoying the shade and ready food sources 😉
How about you? Have you tried growing native plants to your area? How about heirloom or heritage breeds?

Naturally after reading a book on seed saving I had to go out and buy some heritage seeds...even though our growing season is almost over. I already can’t wait to start some of these beauties! I have never purchased from Heritage Harvest Seeds but they seem to offer really cool rare varieties for an awesome price.
Next year I’m going to try to only grow heritage/heirloom varieties in my garden and attempt to save seeds. Usually I try to save my peas, beans and potatoes. This year we are going to also save some tomato and pepper seeds. And for the past 2 years I’ve been saving my nasturtium seeds because they are the most amazing, full and delicious nasturtiums I have ever seen!
With the industrialization of our food system growing and saving heritage breeds has become so important. We are quickly losing breeds that our grandparents grew and that their parents grew back in their home countries. Corporations are now own seeds therefore owning the only way for us to sustain ourselves(food!). This isn’t right and saving seeds and supporting heritage growers is the small step I can take to make a change in the food system.

Planning your garden is partly about deciding what varieties to grow to meet the needs of your family. Heading towards spring is a good time to think about what tomatoes to grow for all of the different ways they can be used. Our heritage tomato selector chart is available on line and allows you to easily compare different varieties and their uses.
We all have our favourite tomatoes and I find it hard to choose. Some of my favourites are
Alma - great to eat, fantastic dried and stored in olive oil for a winter treat.
Black Cherry - beautiful, fantastic eaten fresh and such a good colour.
Broad Ripple Yellow currant - great for browsing on in the garden for that taste of summer, much loved by children and prolific so handfuls can be added whole into salads.
Island Bay - a great beefsteak type that does well for us here in the Far North.

No matter how small a difference we think we may be able to make, we should still make it. Your endeavours could influence people in ways you may never know.
.
I live in a tiny flat but I stuff as many plants inside and out as I can 🌿.
. Although only potted (in terracotta) they provide food for pollinators & other wildlife(& myself), wildlife habitat, herbs/flowers for my medicinal recipes, gardening is good for your mental & physical health, provide friends & neighbours with bouquets, keep away those mossies & simply enjoy their beauty 🌸 🦋🐞🐝🍓
.
Plants also remove toxins & allergens within your home, and offset your carbon emissions 🌏🌿🌎🌱
.
Being plastic-free, organic & zero waste is easy with a little forethought. Terracotta pots, buy soil in bulk, horse manure from the stables, metal & wood garden implements - people have been gardening way before plastic!
.
Bonus points for native and heritage plants💚
.
You never know, you may plant that seed of inspiration in someone else.

Stories of our seeds - Margaret Curtain Tomatoes
This tomato came to us from the collection of Henry Harrington who was an amazing gardener and seed saver down in Southland.
Dark coloured tomatoes have been shown to be very nutritious and this is a large beefsteak, with the “black’ tomato colouring. It looks amazing and is absolutely delicious. A great tomato to try! What's your favourite heritage tomato?

Broad beans. @thediggersclub heritage crimson flowering broad bean that I’ve grown from seed this Winter. The plants are just starting to display their beautiful cerise coloured petals. It’s wonderful to have some pink prettiness in the Winter edible garden -and hopefully a good crop of pods to eat will follow! This variety of broad bean was recovered by Diggers from Norfolk Island, where it was planted in the late 1770’s. Lovely to have a bit of colonial history growing in my vege patch from a picturesque island that I visited with my family in 1985. #diggersclub #broadbeans #heritageplants #norfolkisland #crimsonbroadbeans #broadbeanflowers #myvegepatch #balconygarden #growwhatyoueat #wintervegetables #pinkflowers #edibleflowers

I have grown apple cucumbers this year. I picked up a plant locally that someone was selling from their doorstep and it is a first for me. They are lovely and crisp though feels a little odd to eat as doesn't look anything like a cucumber but tastes like one! #cucumber #applecucumber #heritageplants #homegrownfood #mygreenhouse #frommygarden
